Quality & Safety - How Danish standards will benefit your business
Around the world, Danish food products are synonymous with high quality, reliability and excellent hygiene. Danish food manufacturing businesses operate some of the world’s most advanced processing plants and the research and innovation capabilities are internationally renowned. As a business partner to the Danish food cluster, you will gain several strategic advantages within quality and food safety.
High standards, quality and food safety – by Denmark
High quality is one of the basic values of the Danish food cluster, and we constantly strive to do better by setting the bar higher: Denmark was, for instance, the first country to introduce compulsory pasteurization of milk – and we have a long tradition of working for a consistently stable quality in our products. Another example is our animal welfare labeling, a voluntary scheme where the requirements for animal welfare are considerably stricter than the current statutory requirements in Denmark and the EU, and subsequently much stricter than the requirements in standard production.
When it comes to securing the quality of food in terms of control and certificates, the Danish food cluster is especially well known for being a frontrunner. Our key areas are veterinary safety, food safety and hygiene, sustainability and production optimisation. This is why China has identified Denmark as a partner country and a role model for the development of high quality and food safety in their products. As a result of this collaboration, Denmark has doubled its export of food processing equipment to China from 2012 to 2013.

Better results are secured by control and trust in the value chain
Just as high quality is one of the defining characteristics of the Danish food cluster’s sales position today, food safety is also one of the Danish food clusters strengths. We pride ourselves on our ability and competence in this area – and the fact that Denmark has become well-known for it.
Ensuring food safety is a complex issue as it involves all stages of a comprehensive production chain. One reason food safety is well developed in Denmark is that the entire value chain in the food industry is located within a small geographical area. This means that a lot of experience is accumulated and accessible when optimising the quality and safety of food in areas such as traceability; here it is possible to track and trace Danish food ingredients all the way back to the raw materials.
Traceability is made possible by the highly developed and effective Danish control systems, carried out in close collaboration between governmental authorities and food producers. This unique, efficient system encourages and fosters a high amount of trust and reliability in our products nationally – and especially internationally.
In addition, the low amount of corruption and collaboration with control systems on a government level secures the quality and consistency of Danish products.

Although strict controls have been a hallmark of the Danish approach, the industry has often been ahead of new food safety legislation. A good example is the Danish Salmonella Action Plan for poultry, which has been in use since 1995. It operates on every stage of the production chain and secures, that the Danish poultry in the stores is free from Salmonella.
As a business partner with the Danish food cluster, you have the advantage of working with a certified track record of product safety, quality, and punctuality. You’ll also be a part of our continuous to find better solutions, and thereby contributing to achieve our shared sustainability goals and creating solutions for tomorrow – by Denmark.
